Abstract

A pseudoangiotensin II has been found in gastric juice using an angiotensin II radioimmunoassay. Its concentration approximated that of angiotensin II in normal plasma for three subjects with normal gastric acid secretion, but in juice from three hypochlorhydric subjects was tenfold higher. This pseudoangiotensin II was heat labile, but 85% precipitable by half-saturated ammonium sulphate, little adsorbed on charcoal, and earlier in effluent from G-25 Sephadex than standard angiotensin II. In the gastric juice of the hypochlorhydric subjects, the concentration of pseudoangiotensin II fell after pentagastrin or insulin hypoglycaemia gastric stimulation, but not in the gastric juice of those with normal gastric acidity.
