Summary

1. The operation of Gastroplasty was described by a film at the Thoraxchirurgische Arbeitstagung.

2. The main points brought out by this demonstration are described in this paper.

3. The operation is used to control gastric reflux in patients with hiatus hernia and short oesophagus.

4. Providing that gastric reflux is controlled all peptic strictures resulting from it can be brought under control.

5. In the author's practice since the operation was introduced in April 1955 it has been used on 60 patients and no other operation for peptic stricture of the oesophagus has had to be performed. In particular it is emphasised that no stricture has been excised.
