Summary

The gas exchange was studied in three groups of animals in order to determine whether a transplanted lung resumes its normal function in the host.

  1. Homotransplant left and ligature of the right pulmonary artery.

  2. Autotransplant left and ligature of the right pulmonary artery.

  3. Denervation of the left lung and ligature of the right pulmonary artery.

Oxygen saturation and pressure as well as CO2 pressure in the arterial blood remained nearly normal immediately after operation and for the following days but all animals expired within 4–6 days. The decrease of standard bicarbonate suggests certain unfavourable influences on the circulation. But the fact that neither lung received a normal blood flow and was regulated by normal nerval stimuli at the same time seems to be of greater importance. In this fashion respiratory control may be decisively disturbed and may thus substantially contribute to the lethal outcome.
