Abstract
Biopsy of the skin is the most important adjuvant diagnostic method
in dermatology. It is essential for a specific diagnosis of many dermatoses and
serves as quality control for clinical diagnosis. Nevertheless, skin biopsies
are performed only rarely in children, as compared to adults. Application of
EMLA cream before infiltration of a local anaesthetic allows biopsies of the
skin to be performed without any pain. Therefore, the indication for skin
biopsy in children should be adjusted to that in adults in order to raise
diagnostic standards in pediatric dermatology.
