Summary
Administration to four healthy young men of fructose and xylitol in a dose of up to 0.25 g/kg × h did not change the concentration of lactate, pyruvate, and bicarbonate. Glucose was tolerated in a dose of up to 0.75 g/kg × h. An increase in the rate of supply resulted in an increased lactate and pyruvate but a decreased bicarbonate concentration. A combination of fructose, glucose and xylitol (2 : 1 : 1) could be administered at a dose of 0.5 g/kg × h without any change in lactate, pyruvate and bicarbonate concentrations. The same was true of a 1 : 1 mixture of fructose and xylitol. These results demonstrate that the simultaneous supply of several carbohydrates in low concentrations makes it possible to achieve a higher intake than would be tolerated when the substances are administered separately.
