Summary
The entire life-cycle of proliferating toxoplasma was studied by means of infected cell cultures and micro-photographing its various phases. A vacuole is formed in the host-cell plasma around the invading parasite, which is bounded by a seam of closely tacked mitochondria. The division of toxoplasma occurs by »endodyogeny«: two daughter cells are formed by division, the daughter cells leaving the old communal covering membrane either together or one immediately after the other. The cover is slipped off and gradually absorbed. In the same way, rosette-like toxoplasma colonies develop, which can always be seen during later development. All members of a colony divide at the same time. Division goes on until the host cell dies and the enclosed toxoplasma cells are free and move about actively. This motility allows them to search for new host-cells and to invade them.
