Summary

The case is reported of a woman who in 1950 (at 55 years of age) underwent a radical mastectomy for carcinoma. There were metastases to the regional lymph nodes at that time. Five years later there were lung metastases and a soft-tissue metastasis in the thoracic wall. Depot-testosterone, 50 mg. was injected three times weekly. The metastases disappeared within three months and, maintaining the high testosterone doses, no metastases had recurred by the end of 1960. A short interruption of testosterone administration at the beginning of 1960 quickly led to the appearance of one of the lung metastases, as proven by radiology. But it again disappeared upon resumption of the high testosterone doses. There have been some signs of virilization, but these have not been serious despite a total testosterone dose of about 43,000 mg.
