Summary

Artificially fractured tibiae in rabbits were surrounded directly by a cuff made of Araldite soaked in polyurethane in such a way that the cuff extended 1.0 to 1.5 cm. over the intact part of the bone on either side of the fracture. This provided a torsion-proof and stable fixation which allowed the animals to bear weight and walk upon the damaged leg at once. A similar procedure can be used to fix alloplastic or homoplastic bone bridges. The occurrence of so-called fatigue fractures some time afterwards has been observed and is explained by the characteristics of the resin. Callus formation is usually prevented. The use of Araldite in the treatment of pathological fractures in man is discussed.
