Summary

The metabolism reacts in three phases to the injection of pyrogenes (“P 952 ASTA”); an initial trophotrope phase being succeeded by an ergotrope phase, whilst the third phase is again trophotrope. After acetylcholine injection O2 consumption during the first and third phase decreases considerably more than without a preceding pyrogene injection. During the second phase, the phase of rising temperature, metabolism is increased, and acetylcholine injections result in only a slight decrease, sometimes even in an increase, of O2 consumption. The phases of this “vegetative rhythm” (Siedek) are clearly discernible, even if the rise in temperature after pyrogene injection is absent. The onset of the temperature rise and the decrease in O2 consumption following acetylcholine administration are independent of the pyrogene dosage. Prolonged treatment with pyrogene results in diminished sensitivity which, however, affects only the height of the temperature and not the duration of the fever. Whilst thyroxine does not influence the rhythm of the phases after pyrogene, adrenaline and nor-adrenaline may shorten the trophotrope first phase. The leucocytes, as a rule, follow the same pattern which, however, does not always coincide with the temperature curve. Pyrogene injections may be followed by a considerable reduction of the eosinophil cells, even with a negative Thorn test. There is no uniforme influence of pyrogene on the excretion of 17-ketosteroid.
