Summary

The effects of the antibiotics on the intermediary metabolism, apart from their direct effects on the micro-organisms, are discussed. By treating hepatitides with aureomycin at an early stage (starting the treatment within 4 days after the appearance of jaundice) the duration of the illness can be shortened, as was demonstrated in 64 patients. If the treatment with aureomycin (250 mgs orally, 4 doses daily) was started on the first day the duration of the illness was reduced to 10,6 days; started on the second day (after jaundice has appeared) it lasted for 16,8 days, and for 23,5 days if treatment had started on the 3rd or 4th day. This treatment of hepatitides with aureomycin at an early stage accords with the principles — now become commonplace — on the use of antibiotics in bacterial infections.
