Summary
This recent metaanalysis included an evaluation of nine randomized controlled trials
that studied the rehabilitation of geriatric patients who had suffered a hip fracture.
Using pooling of the aggregate data from each study, functional improvements were
significantly better for those patients who received a multidisciplinary inpatient
rehabilitation program compared with those who received usual care, both at discharge
and at longer term follow-up. There was less risk of nursing home admission and also
of mortality in the rehabilitated patients compared with the usual care patients.
