  • Die Stigmatisierung psychisch Kranker kann als Prozess beschrieben werden, bei dem Labeling, die Zuschreibung negativer Stereotype und negative emotionale Reaktionen zur Ausgrenzung und Diskriminierung einer Minderheit führen.

  • Die Ablehnung und Benachteiligung durch das soziale Umfeld wird als öffentliche Stigmatisierung bezeichnet.

  • Selbststigmatisierung tritt auf, wenn die negativen Haltungen der Umwelt von den Betroffenen verinnerlicht und auf sich selbst angewandt werden.

  • Abhängigkeitserkrankungen und Schizophrenien gehören zu den am stärksten stigmatisierten psychischen Erkrankungen.

  • Negative Stereotype sind bei verschiedenen Erkrankungen unterschiedlich ausgeprägt. Bei der Schizophrenie dominiert das Stereotyp der Gefährlichkeit, Schuldzuweisungen spielen vor allem bei Abhängigkeitserkrankungen eine Rolle.

  • Trotz Zunahme des Wissens über biologische Ursachen psychischer Krankheiten in der Allgemeinbevölkerung hat die Stigmatisierung der Betroffenen in den letzten Jahren nicht abgenommen.

  • Die am besten belegte Strategie zur Entstigmatisierung ist persönlicher Kontakt mit Betroffenen.

  • Stigmacoping und Stigmaresilienz beschreiben Strategien und Fähigkeiten, als Betroffener erfolgreich das Stigma psychischer Krankheit zu bewältigen.
