We hypothesized that transient and mild reduction of consciousness within 12h is a unique clinical group that constituded by children both with and without delirious behavior, and it should be distinguished from acute encephalopathy.
In this study, we considered that reduced consciousness lasting for more than 12h is essential for a diagnosis of acute encephalopathy, as is commonly accepted in Japan [10] [12].
