Zusammenfassung

Fragestellung:

Abstract

Purpose:

This study examines return to work rates and determinants associated with return to work 3 months after herniated disc surgery.

Methods:

This longitudinal observational study examined 534 patients (18–55 years) in personal interviews during hospital stay. 486 patients participated in a 3-month follow-up survey via telephone (drop-out rate: 9%).

Results:

40.9% of the herniated disc patients in this study were able to return to work 3 months after surgery. Among others important risk factors were psychiatric comorbidity, pain, a lower health-related quality of life, employment status and a lower subjective prognosis of employment. Patients who returned to work participated significantly more often in outpatient rehabilitation than patients who did not return to work.

Conclusions:

Rehabilitation outcome may be improved and return to work may be facilitated by identifying and addressing a risk group for non-return to work at an early stage.
