Equine multinoduläre Lungenfibrose (EMPF) ist eine progressive interstitielle Lungenerkrankung, die mit γ-Herpesviren in Verbindung steht. Sie wurde 2007 das erste Mal beschrieben und seither auch unter anderem in Deutschland und Österreich diagnostiziert. Leider ist die Erkrankung zum Zeitpunkt der Diagnosestellung meist bereits weit fortgeschritten und deshalb häufig mit einer vorsichtigen bis schlechten Prognose verbunden. Ein früheres Erkennen könnte die Zahl der überlebenden Tiere erhöhen – ein triftiger Grund, um sich mit der EMPF als Differenzialdiagnose sowie den Schwierigkeiten in Diagnostik und Therapie zu beschäftigen.
