Relapse management in patients with GHB dependence

Einleitung: Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a (GABA metabolite and agonist with central nervous depressive activity. GHB addiction is a rapid growing problem in the Netherlands. New and efficient methods for detoxification from GHB have been developed. However, after detoxification patients suffer from severe craving leading to rapid relapse in substance abuse mainly GHB. Relapse in detoxified patients is alarmingly high. Methods to provide the best treatment for the addicted patients are limited. This study presents preliminary data about the effect of Baclofen in relapse management.

Methode: Open label design monitoring study. Patients whom have completed a detoxification were treated with a daily dose of Baclofen for 3 months. During that period the benefits, craving and the side effects of Baclofen were monitored.

Diskussion/Ergebnisse: 10 patients were treated with Baclofen. Results showed higher abstinence rate and decrease in the craving scores.

Schlussfolgerung: Baclofen can contribute to the treatment of GHB addiction and reduces the high relapse rates.
