Zusammenfassung

Der Fall einer Meningoenzephalitis bei einem Hund infolge der systemischen Ausbreitung einer Infektion mit Cryptococcus neoformans wird dargestellt. Der Hund wurde wegen einer Vergrößerung der Lymphknoten im Halsbereich vorgestellt und entwickelte zusätzlich neurologische Symptome, die hinweisend für eine Meningoenzephalitis waren. Die Liquoruntersuchung ergab eine hochgradige Pleozytose mit vorwiegend neutrophilen Granulozyten sowie Kryptokokken. Aufgrund des schlechten Allgemeinzustandes wurde der Hund euthanasiert. Die durchgeführte Sektion und weiterführende Untersuchungen ergaben eine systemische Infektion mit Cryptococcus neoformans. Neben einer hochgradigen granulomatösen Meningoenzephalitis wurden multiple miliare Granulome in Milz, Niere und Lunge mit intraläsional gelegenen Kryptokokken gefunden. Auch in der unveränderten Nasenschleimhaut konnten die Erreger nachgewiesen werden.

Summary

A case of meningoencephalitis caused by systemic infection with Cryptococcus neoformans in a dog is described. The animal was presented with an enlargement of cervical lymph nodes and showed neurological signs indicative of meningoencephalitis. Examination of cerebrospinal fluid revealed a neutrophilic pleocytosis with cryptococcus-like organisms. Due to its bad condition the dog was euthanized. The necropsy and the complementary laboratory investigations showed a systemic infection with Cryptococcus neoformans. A granulomatous meningoencephalitis and multiple miliar granulomas in the spleen, the kidneys, and the lung were found. Cryptococcus neoformans was identified within the lesions and the otherwise unchanged nasal mucous membranes.
