Der Schlaf beeinflusst eine Vielzahl physiologischer Prozesse und die autonome Nervenfunktion. Auch Herzfrequenz und Blutdruck werden Schlafstadien-abhängig reguliert mit einem Absinken des systolischen und diastolischen Blutdrucks und der Herzfrequenz im Tiefschlaf. Ein fehlendes Absinken des Blutdrucks (Non-Dipping) oder gar ein Anstieg sind unabhängige Prädiktoren für das kardiovaskuläre Risiko.
