Zusammenfassung
Zu den wichtigsten Stummfilmen mit psychiatrischer Thematik zählt “Das Cabinet des
Dr. Caligari”. Die Produktion gilt als erstes expressionistisches Filmwerk und markiert
die Emanzipation des Mediums zur eigenständigen Kunstform in Deutschland. “Caligari”
erzählt vordergründig das Schicksal eines Irrenarztes, der mithilfe eines somnambulen

Patienten, die Anstalt als Ort von Repression gegenüber einer psychiatrischen Institution,
die Aussicht auf Genesung bietet. Im Hintergrund steht dabei die Vorstellung einer
instabilen Gesellschaft in der Zeit nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg, für die das Reflektieren
über die Rolle von Autoritäten immense Bedeutung besitzt.

featuring a psychiatric topic. This motion picture is regarded to be the first expressionist
cinematographic work marking the breakthrough of the medium as an independent art.
At first sight “Caligari” portrays the fate of an alienist who, with the help of a
somnambulant medium, wants to prove how a person can be induced to commit murder by
means of suggestion. Yet, the end of the movie turns the basic story line into its
opposite. The whole plot appears suddenly as a paranoid system of a patient living
in the lunatic asylum of the “real” Dr. Caligari, producing a stereotyped representation
of psychiatric key issues: bad vs. good psychiatrist, manipulative vs. benevolent
attitude towards the patient, the asylum as a place of repression vs. a psychiatric
institution offering a perspective of convalescence. In the background looms the idea
of an instable post World War I society eager to reflect upon the role of authorities.
