Introduction:

Digitization reached the hospital. It is unclear what how patients can benefit from apps and wearables. The article gives an overview of the benefits of apps and digital devices for patients.

Methods:

We collected data from an internet search in altavista and yahoo for the key words "Apps", "Digitization", "Medicine" and "ENT" on google. Studies on apps, workflow and ENT were searched MEDLINE/PubMed. In addition, reports were analyzed by institutions and authorities. The existing data were sorted by top criteria and considered the reference to the ENT.

Results:

Out of 120,000 hits 136 sources could be used. Medical apps can be divided into four categories: clinical care apps, patient health management apps, medical research apps and apps for workflow management. For the hospital, apps serve as reference and the professional exchange. Medical devices today come with a digital device. Measurements can be read about an app. The ENT apps with tinnitus and Vertigo are available. For patients, the online futures contracts and the online prescription are the main wishes of digitization. Apps can expose the patient information on mobile devices and help to shorten the retention period for the clinic.

Bottom line: Digitization can enhance the provision of hospital and practice through continuous information availability and allow an ongoing exchange with colleagues. It is however important that doctors can be familiar today with digital offerings and advise the patient. Until then, a benefit for the patient can be assured.
