The work of the commission Anti-infectiva, Resistence and Therapy at the Robert Koch Institute – a contribution to the optimum use of anti-infectiva

Aims:

The commission Anti-infectiva, Resistance and Therapy (ART) founded by the Federal Ministry of Health is an independent expert committee of experts whose activities are coordinated by the branch of the field of nosocomial infections, surveillance of antibiotic resistance and consumption in the Robert Koch Institute.

Because of the increasing resistance of infective pathogens the expert usage of antibiotics is an important demand in order to prevent of the development and spread of resistant pathogen germs and to preserve the effectiveness of anti- infectiva.

Method:

It is the task of the commission ART to draw up recommendations on standards of the diagnostics and therapy of infectious diseases according to the current level of medical science in close cooperation with the AWMF, the several expert commissions and other scientific institutions and organs of the self-government.

Results:

By now the following position papers have been produced:

  • Conditions and strategies of the successful implementation of anti-infective guidelines

  • Stock-taking, analysis of the need and necessary improvements of the development and revision of the guidelines in the medical field of infections in Germany

  • Anti-infectiva and resistance

  • Effective fight against health risks

  • Publications on the shortfall of antibiotics including alternatives to the first choice; the principles of antibiotic therapy; infective pathogens and their resistances against anti- infektiva; surveillance systems and other data sources; the manual of the commission ART for anti-infective guidelines.

Conclusion:

The recommendations of the commission ART are briefly explained and principles for the ENT subject are shown.
