Longterm results of residual hearing in cochlea implantation with a mid-scala electrode array

Introduction:

Patients with residual hearing benefit from a postoperative hearing preservation after cochlea implantation. Preservation of residual hearing during CI-surgery depends on several factors. A major factor is the specific electrode design. It is the aim of the study to analyse the long term results of preservation of residual hearing of pre- and postoperative pure tone audiometry in midscala-cochlear-implant supply in this patients.

Methods:

Pure tone audiometry was conducted in patients with residual hearing, who where supplied with a midscala-cochlear-implant (Advanced bionics HiFocus MidScala) in a monocentric setting between 10/2014 and 11/2015. The results of the pre- and postoperative pure tone audiometry as well as two and three years after CI-adjustment were compared.

Results:

In the majority of the patients, a residual hearing preservation could be shown after CI-implantation. In the majority of these patients in the long term period the resiudal hearing was preserved.

Conclusion:

The results of this study show that a good postoperative preservation, as well as a good long term preservation of residual hearing can be achieved by midscala-cochlear implantation.
