Navigated Cochlear Implant Electrode

Introduction:

A prototype navigated electrode for cochlear implantation is introduced. It uses the CT and MRT data obtained preoperatively for the “real time” navigation of the electrode intraoperatively.

The purpose of this study is to examine the possible benefits of the navigated electrode for cochlear implantation.

Materials and Methods:

The experiment was made on a 3D model of human cochlea made by a 3D printer.

The tip of the navigated cochlear implantation electrodewas designed on the bases of guiding wire used by electromagnetic navigation systems for ENT and neurosurgery with micro coil inside the tip.

Results:

The tests of the navigated electrode for cochlear implantation showed the advantages of this technology, namely the “real time” presentation of the tip of the cochlear implant electrode. The accuracy of the navigated electrode for cochlear implantation during the tests was according the electromagnetic navigation system parameters (submilimetric).

Conclusions:

In cases of difficult insertion of the electrode (ossification of the cochlea, Mondini Syndrome, etc.) the visualization of the tip of the electrode would be of great importance.

Preoperatively a routine CT and MRT are performed. The proposed prototype uses this information.

During the experiment it was proved that it is possible to obtain visual information about the position of the tip of the electrode of the cochlear implant in “real time” during cochlear implantation.

This prototype of electrode for cochlear implantation is the first to present anatomical proof of the proper insertion without additional radiation for the patient.
