Retrospective analysis of clinical diagnosis and therapy of epistaxis at the Dessau Medical Center between 2005 and 2015
Introduction:
Epistaxis has become an increasing cause for clinical consultation with interdisciplinary therapy. The multifactorial genesis and the higher age of the patients lead to an increasing need for clinical treatment, often recrudescently.
Methods:
Data of 720 epistaxis patients who were hospitalized at the Dessau Medical Center between 01/01/2005 and 12/31/2015.
Results:
Predominantly male patients were affected, with the majority of recrudescence patients being the age of 70 and older. More than 50% of the patients of this study suffered from posterior bleeding with longer hospitalization length. The median value of blood pressure during hospital admission was hypertensive; the prevalence of nicotine consumption of the investigated cohort was significantly higher compared to the total population. Recrudescence patients in this study were more multimorbid and were more often using prescribed anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs. The most commonly applied therapy was the insertion of tamponades. The most often observed medical complication was the need for blood transfusion.
Conclusions:
Increased age, accompanying illnesses, as well as posterior bleeding are main causes for hospitalization of epistaxis patients. The use of tamponades led in most cases to sufficient hemostasis.
