In obstructive sleep apnea, the gold standard of treatment is continuous positive airway pressure by a ventilation mask at night. Many patients do not tolerate this and the disease remains untreated. Often these patients are not offered alternatives, although patients with large tonsils, dysgnathia or supraglottic obstruction may even be cured by an operation. Others are suitable for a mandibular advancement device, obstruction at the base of tongue can be treated effectively by a hypoglossal stimulation implant or some patients might need abdominal surgery to loose weight. To find out the best treatment option for patients with CPAP intolerance, at out hospital we have established an interdisciplinary board including specialists in sleep medicine, ENT, maxillofacial surgery, abdominal surgery, neurology and pulmology. We feel that like in oncology boards interdisciplinary treatment decisions will lead to a higher treatment success and better care for the patients.
