Introduction:

Fastly growing lesions of the tongue usually cause problems while eating, speaking or pain. We report on the case of a 75-year old female patient, who presented with an egg-sized large mass of the tongue that has been growing for few years.

Methods:

Clinical examination revealed a big, the oral cavity nearly filling soft mass of the tongue, that was covered from intact mucosa. The first upcoming differential diagnosis was a cyst. A surgically resection was performed under general anaesthesia.

Results:

Histopathological examination showed a 5.1 × 4.5 × 3.0 cm large tissue with isomorphic lipocytes without display of multi vacuolary lipoblasts, crisscrossed from fine connective tissue septs without any atypia or spindle cells. The tissue was compatible with a lipoma, resected in sano on the present cutting level.

Conclusions:

Lipoma is a common diagnosis in ENT. Located in the oral cavity they are somehow rare. Most of the enoral lipoma though are in fields oh the buccal mucosa or the oral ground. The described intramuscular localisation is a rare differential diagnosis of possible lesions oft he tongue.
