Introduction:

Head and neck and cancer is a unique entity which has profound effect on the quality of life. Surgery for these tumors is extensive and complicated procedure involving tumor ablation and reconstruction.

Methods:

We review the current state of the diagnosis, staging and surgical treatment of advanced cancer of the head and neck in Bulgaria from financial point of view. We place our focus on reconstruction and rehabilitation after radical surgery, the cost of treatment and challenges that the surgeon and the patient face through the process of management.

Results:

Management of head and neck cancer patients currently is severely underfunded.

Conclusion:

Current health care system in Bulgaria does not meet the needs of cancer patients. Underfunding puts in risk both the patients and the development of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.
