A rare differential diagnosis of unilateral sinonasal tumors
Introduction:
The sinonasal myxoma is a rare differential diagnosis of unilateral sinonasal neoplasms, showing a low-malignant behaviour with local infiltration and a high rate of recurrence.
Case-Report:
A 51-year-old patient presented to our clinic with a 1-year-history of unilateral nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea. In the clinical and radiographical examination an unilateral tumor arising from the paranasal sinus and the nasal cavity was visible. The initial diagnosis of sinonasal angiofibroma was reassessed during a second revision surgery to a low-grade malignant myxoma.
Conclusion:
During diagnosis of rare sinonasal neoplasms, difficulties in differentiation of tumor entities may occur, even when using immunhistochemical markers. Furthermore the planning of treatment and follow-up may be complex. In such cases inter-institutional collaboration can be necessary.
