Factors influencing incidence of benign salivary gland neoplasia. Retrospective single-center chart review of patients treated between 2009 and 2015

Introduction:

Salivary gland neoplasia are with an incidence rate of 80% benign. Pleomorphic adenomas are with 85% described as the most common and Warthin tumour with approx. 15% as second common benign salivary gland neoplasia. Obesity and male sex are discussed as genetic factors. Data, however, is still missing.

Patients and methods:

In a retrospective chart review data of 412 patients (210 male, 202 female), treated for benign salivary gland neoplasia between 2009 and 2015, was analyzed. Clinical data was correlated with histopathologic entities and tested statistically.

Results:

Median age was 58 years. Overall 386 (93.7%) patients had a tumour of the parotid gland, 26 (6.3%) patients one of the submandibular gland. Histopathologic examination revealed a Warthin-tumour in 212 (51.5%) and a pleomorphic adenoma in 147 (35.7%) Nicotine consumption of more than 20 pack years was reported by 48.5% of the patients. Bodymass-index (BMI) of 66% of the patients was ≥25. Advanced age, male sex and nicotine consumption were significantly (p < 0,001) associated with Warthin-tumuor. Influence of BMI could not be verified.

Conclusion:

In contrast to data known from literature, this study reveals an increase of Warthin tumours in benign salivary gland neoplasia. Male sex and nicotin consumption are associated with the ethiogenesis of Warthin tumours.
