Frequency and therapy of cystadenolymphoma of the parotid gland
Introduction:
Until now cystadenoma (CL) is mentioned in the literature as the second most common benign tumor of the glandula parotis. Recent publications seem to display here a change. The purpose of this study is thus to evaluate retrospectively the frequency and therapy of CL in our patient population.
Methods:
All patients were included, which received a parotidectomy from 3/2014 – 8/2018. The data was collected prospectively and examined concerning the tumor entity with an emphasis on the form of surgery and the postoperative complications.
Results:
Among 592 patient who underwent parotidectomy, 463 (78,2%) cases showed a benign lesion in the histologic examination. 197 (42,5%) from these were CL, 128 (27,6%) pleomorphic adenomas (PA) and 136 (29,4%) other benign lesions. Among the patients with CL multifocal lesions were detected in 53 (26,9%) cases and 9 (4,6%) patients had bilateral lesions. 129 (65,4%) of patients with CL could be treated obtaining the gland with an extracapsular dissection (ECD). A recurrence in the same gland was not observed.
Conclusions:
Our study shows, that the CL is the most common benign parotid tumour in our patient population ahead of the PA. Hence we can share the observation of other authors. The reasons therefore are so far still uncertain. Maybe the improved medical imaging leads to a more frequent detection of CL. Gland observing therapy with ECD has priority. Unlike PA tumour spread is here improbable.
