Introduction With regard to the Masterplan 2020 new targets are aimed at in medical education . A high practical orientation and academic expertise is focused. To ensure these intentions, the Freiburg Dept. of ORL, HNS changed its education program fundamentally to a peer-student orientated curriculum. A minimum of one-third of the seminar‘s time is now dedicated to the student’s practical experience.

Methods We performed a prospective, non-interventional study. An anonymous survey was introduced to evaluate student’s expectations at the beginning of the 2 week rotation in the ORL Dept. At the end of that period another survey evaluated the estimated skills gain after the rotation. To assess the effectiveness regarding the teaching of practical skills during rotation period, a survey was developed, which was given to students before and after the tutorials.

Results Students evaluated an significant increase of practical skills after finishing the ORL-rotation, depending on the topic. The overall result showed that student’s expectation’s were excelled. The estimated gain of knowledge and the focus on ORL-topics were evaluated in a very positive way.

Conclusion The Freiburg ORL education system focuses on mediation of practical skills. The result underline that it is already adapted to the requirements of the Masterplan 2020.
