Backround Practice-based teaching provides ideal conditions for both students and lecturers. In the past, most information was brought to students by traditional teacher centred lectures. Individual differences in study behaviour and learning pace were not considered. To improve this situation the Dept. of ORL, HNS of the University of Freiburg/Germany build and launched an e-learning platform for medical students. The website presents ENT contents in a motivational and practice-oriented manner to study independently. We propose that using this e-learning website enhances study motivation and professional commitment.

Methods Students were given free access to e-learning contents during their practical course. Seminar contents were made available through different media. Following each practical course, the e-learning website was statistically evaluated via EvaSys analytical software.

Results The use of online teaching methods and media builds confidence in acquiring practical skills and increases students’ interest in otolaryngology. Respondents state that the e-learning platform aids them to prepare better for practical examinations. Test revisions as well as a clear-structured and appealing website presentation motivates them to use the platform as an additional study medium.

Conclusion An innovative use of online media has become essential to successful medical education. It allows to study independently and motivates students to engage in the subject. Our results indicate that the ENT E-Learning website is a powerful tool to improve academic teaching and guarantees effective sustainable learning.
