Percutaneous Thermal Ablation for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Percutaneous thermal ablation is a commonly used treatment for focal hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), particularly effective for small and early-stage tumors (<3 cm in diameter). When executed expertly in appropriately selected patients, ablation may be curative with survival outcomes similar to surgical resection.[1] [2] [3] In the United States, heat-based modalities such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and microwave ablation (MWA) are favored due to the ability to quickly generate coagulation necrosis and help maintain hemostasis. Herein, we will review our recommended patient section parameters, preprocedural management, heat-based ablation techniques for commonly encountered scenarios, and postprocedural management.
