Vestibular neuropathia in the seasonal course

Introduction The acute neuropathy vestibularis (NV) is a disease of the peripheral vestibular system, which in addition to the clinical emergency care for a definitive diagnosis also a diagnostic procedures requires. The data on incidences of NV in the literature vary. The aim of the retrospective study was to investigate an anticipated seasonal accumulation of NV due to a temporary increase in patient numbers.

Material and methods: In the period 2006-2016, the examination of patient records and examination results were performed, which were hospitalized at a tertiary referral center with a diagnosis of acute NV (ICD-10 H81.2). 483 patients were enrolled in a clinical and apparative NV. The daily, monthly, annual but also seasonal occurrence of the NV was recorded. Results: The inpatient treatment of NV did not show a statistically significant difference between summer and winter half-year, in the seasonal and monthly course. On average, 40 patients were treated with acute NV every month during the 10-year period (4 patients / month / year). The lowest number of patients was found in February (29 cases) and the highest in October (56 cases). Also in the weekly course showed an equal distribution of the onset of illness.

Discussion Seasonal parameters alone, such as summer and winter months, the four seasons and the monthly coverage of patients with acute NV, are not suitable for recording the accumulation of patients with acute NV in the course of the year. Rather, changes in biometeorologic parameters should be investigated in the future with the occurrence of this disease.
