Marcelo Matiello, MD, MSc, and Lee H. Schwamm, MD
The Guest Editors of this issue of Seminars in Neurology are Drs. Marcelo Matiello and Lee Schwamm.
Dr. Marcelo Matiello is Assistant Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School and a senior neurologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Dr. Matiello is the MGH Neurology Clinical Director and also the Director of Inpatient Services and the Director of the MGH Tele-Neurology program. He is the Associate Director of the Neuromyelitis Optica clinic and research unit. He is an editor of the book Pocket Neurology, 3rd edition. His research has been funded by the American Academy of Neurology, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Multiple Sclerosis International Federation, Mass General Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and the Sumaira Foundation. Dr. Matiello is a world-renowned educator in central nervous system diseases, telehealth, and therapeutic plasma exchange. He has presented his work in 22 countries across 5 continents. He has been awarded with the prestigious Mayo Clinic Neurology Research Award, the European Committee for Multiple Sclerosis Best Research Award, the Harvard Medical School Clinical Teaching Award, MGH Child Neurology Award, and the Mass General Clinical Innovation Bowditch Award.
Dr. Schwamm is Vice President of Digital Health and Virtual Care for the Mass General Brigham Health System, a 16-member integrated health care delivery organization of academic medical centers, specialty hospitals, community hospitals, a rehabilitation network, health insurance plan, physician network, teaching organization, and many urgent care and community care practices. He is also Founder and Director of the Center for TeleHealth at MGH, and Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. He graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1991, completed his Neurology and Stroke Fellowship training at MGH in 1996 and shortly thereafter began his 20+ years of pioneering work in the digital transformation of care in the field of stroke and other disciplines. He holds the C. Miller Fisher Chair of Vascular Neurology at the MGH Neurology Department where he serves as Senior Clinical and Strategic Advisor. Dr. Schwamm is the author of over 500 peer-reviewed articles, serves on the editorial board of Stroke and the International Advisory Board of The Lancet Digital Health, and has chaired many of the current practice guidelines for telehealth-enabled stroke care delivery. He is the recipient of numerous awards for innovation, leadership, and stroke advocacy and has an active federally funded research portfolio. His research has been funded by National Institutes of Health, Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Health Resources and Services Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and others.
We greatly appreciate the efforts of Drs. Matiello and Schwamm, as well as all of the contributing authors, for their wonderful work in this issue of Seminars on Tele-Neurology, a rapidly growing and important field, in which they are true pioneers. They have put together a terrific issue, with informative and insightful articles that provide up-to-date, clearly written reviews that cover the gamut of topics surrounding Tele-Neurology.
