Abstract

A great number of patients with signs of craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) are seen within the field of physiotherapy. These signs may extend to the cervical spine region. Manual therapy is known to have an impact on other target areas.

This systematic review addresses the question of the extent to which manual therapy directed to the cervical spine has an effect on the craniomandibular region and vice versa in the case of existing signs of craniomandibular dysfunction.

According to the results of the five included studies manual therapy of the cervical spine has an effect on the pain threshold of the masticatory muscles and the subjective pain sensation. Manual therapy to the cervical spine and to the craniomandibular region reduces limitation of activities of daily living more than manual therapy to the cervical spine alone. Methodical limitations of the included articles mainly applied to a lack of transparency of the interventions and too short follow-ups.
