Der Graupapagei ist einer der am häufigsten gehaltenen Papageien, da ihm eine hohe Intelligenz und Sprachbegabung nachgesagt werden. Häufig führen haltungs- und fütterungsbedingte Fehler zu Erkrankungen der Tiere, die durch eine Optimierung des Managements jedoch vermieden werden können.
