Übergewicht und Adipositas (definiert durch einen Body-Mass-Index [BMI] ≥ 25 kg/m2 Körperoberfläche) stellen ein ernsthaftes und in der Prävalenz zunehmendes Gesundheitsrisiko dar. Gemäß einer aktuellen Studie zur Gesundheit Erwachsener in Deutschland (DEGS1) sind 67 % der Männer und 53 % der Frauen übergewichtig. Die Prävalenz der manifesten Adipositas (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) liegt für Männer bei 23,3 % und für Frauen bei 23,9 %. Im Vergleich dazu waren im Jahre 1998 nur ca. 19 % der Männer und ca. 22 % der Frauen in Deutschland adipös. Insbesondere bei Kindern, Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenen zeigte sich in der aktuellen Erhebung ein Anstieg der Adipositas-Prävalenz, was besonders bedenklich erscheint [1].
