Adult Rhabdomyoma
Authors
Introduction A 58-year-old male patient presented for further evaluation of an incidentally discovered mass in the floor of the mouth. The patient was symptom-free except for a known nasal airway obstruction and complained of no B symptoms.
Methods A contrast-enhanced CT-scan of the neck showed two hypervascularized masses, sharply demarcated from the surrounding area, crossing the midline at the floor of the mouth on the right and in the oropharynx and hypopharynx on the left lateral side. There were no pathologic lymph nodes and no infiltrations of the os hyoideum or mandibula to which the masses extended.
Intraoperatively, we excised brownish lobulated tumors of the floor of the mouth on the right side and the posterior wall of the oropharynx on the left side.
Results Histopathological evaluation of the removed tumors revealed a benign rhabdomyoma. Strong positivity for desmin was seen – MyoD1, myogenin and KI-67 stained only isolated nuclei.
Conclusion Adult Rhabdomyoma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor which originates from skeletal muscle and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of oral well-defined submucosal nodules of the floor of the mouth and the hypo- and oropharynx.
