Der ursprüngliche Lake-Louise-Score (LLS) wurde auf dem „International Hypoxia Symposium“ in Lake Louise 1991 erarbeitet und 1993 reevaluiert. Er besteht aus den 5 Symptomkomplexen Kopfschmerzen, gastrointestinale Symptome, Müdigkeit/Erschöpfung, Benommenheit/Schwindel und Schlafqualität. Jedem Symptomkomplex kann eine Ausprägung von 0 (Normalbefund/keine Probleme) bis 3 (maximale Beschwerden) zugeordnet werden. Ab einer Punktzahl von 3 sind die Kriterien für die akute Bergkrankheit (Acute Mountain Sickness, AMS) erfüllt.
