Peter Hotez coined the terms neglected tropical diseases and neglected diseases of poverty and publishes for many years about these. The awareness for tropical diseases and poverty related infections has been enormously raised by this and the WHO, EU and national governments have responded – more or less. Constant or raising levels of poverty, discrimination of certain minorities, political changes on the Balkan and increasing immigration into southern Europe make it necessary to strengthen efforts concerning the fight against the etiologies of these illnesses and to improve their diagnosis, treatment and vectorcontrol. Newly imported and rare or previously unknown diseases are present in southern Europe and have to be taken into account when caring for patients. The emergence of new diseases has to be expected.
