Introduction The Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Saarland University Hospital offers full training in otorhinolaryngology. This includes prevention, detection, conservative and surgical treatment as well as follow-up care and rehabilitation of diseases, injuries, malformations and tumors. The broad spectrum is completed by the management of functional disorders of the sensory organs. Furthermore, the treatment of voice and hearing disorders is part of the training.

Method The curriculum takes into account regulations of Saarland state medical council, and German state chamber of medicine. Recommendations of the German Society for Otorhinolaryngology and its working group “Young Residents“ are also included. The specified further training contents were structured thematically and were didactically processed and finally put into a chronological sequence.

Concept Employees receive broad, in-depth training using a rotation system. This rotation system covers the outpatient and inpatient treatment as well as operation skills. It is transparently determined what specialist knowledge, operative performance and which professional skills are to be achieved in each training year. The annual employee interview also includes the discussion of target agreements and a review of previous agreements. During employee interviews, however, mandatory assistance, individual advice and support agreements are also to be reached by both sides. An internal specialist discussion is held with senior physicians and the clinic director prior to residency examx.

Conclusion Structured training is the cornerstone of successful medical residency.
