We are pleased to present a special issue of Seminars in Musculoskeletal Radiology, dedicated to knee imaging, that will be the main topic of the refresher course of the annual European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR) meeting in June 2024 in Lugano, Switzerland. The special issue offers a detailed overview of knee imaging, one of the most frequent exams performed in clinical practice. As such, it is important that general radiologists and musculoskeletal radiologists are aware of its different aspects.

Diana Expósito and coworkers and Vito Chianca et al review neoplastic and non-neoplastic bone lesions of the knee and soft tissue lesions around the knee, respectively. Their contribution is essential to classify such lesions correctly without overcalling or undercalling them.

Trochlear dysplasia, patella alta, and excessive lateralization of the tibial tuberosity are the main risk factors for patellar instability. Anthony De Leeuw and Anne Cotten with colleagues focus on those imaging findings.

Danoob Dalili and colleagues address the spectrum of established advanced interventional procedures for knee osteoarthritis, describing the techniques to perform these procedures and discussing the clinical evidence supporting each of them.

Sophia Samira Goller and Reto Sutter emphasize postoperative complications after total knee arthroplasty. The authors focus on hardware and software advancements, such as computed tomography (CT), metal artifact reduction algorithms, dual-energy CT, cone-beam CT, and photon-counting detector CT.

Tom Doorschodt and Mario Maas with coworkers provide a detailed overview of normal and abnormal postoperative findings after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction including a practical and systematic guide for MRI assessment.

Miguel Oliveira Castro et al and Stefano Fusco with Luca Maria Sconfienza and colleagues emphasize the anatomy and pathologies of two challenging locations: the posterolateral and posteromedial corner. The authors discuss the intricate anatomy, biomechanics, imaging modalities, as well as the current challenges, in diagnosing these injuries on MRI.

Paolo Simoni and colleagues review the challenges in distinguishing pathology from the normal appearance of knee radiographs in the pediatric population.

Iwona Sudoł-Szopińska and coauthors review the pathologic findings and imaging correlations for crystallopathies and inflammatory diseases of the knee. The authors emphasize the advances made in recent years in their imaging diagnosis.

Two additional articles enrich our special issue on knee imaging. First, Miraude Adriaensen and colleagues offer an overview of the past, present, and future of the European Diploma in Musculoskeletal Radiology. Second, Rainer Schmitt discusses the contributions of Georg Karl Felix Preiser (1876–1913) for the History Page: Leaders in MSK Radiology series.

I would like to thank each of the authors for contributing their time and expertise to an outstanding issue of Seminars, with the hope that readers will find valuable information to apply in their clinical practice.

Arrivederci a Lugano!
