Assessing the impact of a pulmonary embolism response team on patients presenting with intermediate risk acute pulmonary embolism. A prospective study (ongoing)
Authors
Introduction: Pulmonary embolism (PE) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Intermediate-risk PE poses a clinical challenge, requiring prompt risk stratification and intervention. Pulmonary Embolism Response Teams (PERTs) have emerged as a novel approach to improve the management of PE, particularly in cases of intermediate risk where there are a wide range of treatment modalities ranging from systemic thrombolysis to catheter directed thrombectomy. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a PERT on clinical outcomes and resource utilisation in patients with intermediate-risk PE.
Method: The PERT, compromising a multi-disciplinary team, was introduced in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, a tertiary and acute care hospital located in Singapore on January 2024. Consecutive adult patients with acute PE diagnosed via computed tomography (CTPA) with at least intermediate risk PE as defined by European Society of Cardiology (ESC) 2014 criteria and referred to the service were included. Patient characteristics, therapies and clinical outcomes of intermediate-risk PE patients were evaluated. The primary outcomes included survival to discharge, recurrent PE, major bleeding events and length of hospital and intensive care (ICU) stay.
