Microvascular Decompression for Hemifacial Spasm Caused by Dolichoectatic Vertebral Artery
Hemifacial spasm secondary to a dolichoectatic vertebral artery is a rare but debilitating condition. Macrovascular displacement of the vessel away from the nerve using a Teflon sling is an effective but not always a feasible method. In this video, we demonstrate simple microvascular decompression of the root entry zone to be a safe and effective technique for treating hemifacial spasm, despite residual compression of the nerve complex more distally in the cisternal segment.
