Effects of COVID-19 Infection on QoL and Arterial Stiffness – a longitudinal observational study
Introduction: The long-term effects of COVID-19 infection on health outcomes are still being elucidated. This study investigates the impact of COVID-19 on quality of life (QoL) and hemodynamics as well as arterial stiffness over time in patients post-infection. We particularly focused on the relationship between PWV, a marker for arterial stiffness, and the health-related QoL.
Methods: We conducted a longitudinal observational study in which patients were followed up for hemodynamics and arterial stiffness (Mobil-O-Graph) at different time intervals (T1-2, T3-4, T5-7, T8-10). QoL was assessed using the EQ-5D and EQ-VAS questionnaires. Data were collected and statistically analyzed to identify trends and correlations between PWV, QoL, and other clinical factors.
Results: An increasing trend in arterial stiffness (PWV) was observed over time, with a significant rise in PWV during the later follow-up periods (T8-10). The correlation analysis revealed that higher PWV values were associated with poorer QoL outcomes, particularly in mobility and daily activities, as reflected by negative correlations between PWV and EQ-5D (r=-0.69, p<0.05). Additionally, a modest negative correlation was found between PWV and overall well-being (EQ-VAS, r=-0.37, p<0.05).
Conclusion: COVID-19 appears to have a lasting impact on cardiovascular health, with progressive increases in arterial stiffness. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring cardiovascular health in COVID-19 survivors, and interventions aimed at improving vascular function may have a beneficial effect on post-COVID-19 recovery and QoL.
