Examining the Relationship Between Veterinarians and Veterinary Physiotherapists in South Africa Post Registration of the Veterinary Physiotherapy Profession

Background: Veterinary physiotherapy is a new profession in South Africa (SA). Veterinary physiotherapists must work under referral or in collaboration with a veterinarian. Many veterinary physiotherapists receive few direct referrals from veterinarians. This study aimed to explore the relationship dynamics between veterinarians and veterinary physiotherapists in SA. It further aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to referrals from veterinarians to ensure integration of the professions.

Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study using a mixed-method approach. Three phases of data collection were completed—qualitative data were collected in phases 1 and 3 through interviews. The quantitative component was derived from phase 2, through surveys of veterinarians and veterinary physiotherapists. Qualitative data from the interviews were analysed using an inductive thematic approach to identify common themes. Data from the questionnaires were analysed using a descriptive analysis, and correlation tests were conducted to determine the relationship between variables. Statistical significance was calculated and determined using p < 0.05.

Results: Sixty-five per cent (n = 63) of veterinarians referred patients regularly. Significant correlations were found between the type of veterinary practice and the likelihood to refer. Forty-nine per cent (n = 29) of veterinary physiotherapists receive regular referrals from veterinarians. There was a significant correlation between regular referrals from veterinarians and a higher veterinary physiotherapy caseload. Interviews revealed themes around how communication, location, and understanding of physiotherapy impacted veterinarian’s likelihood to refer.

Conclusion: There appears to be a positive perception of veterinary physiotherapy from veterinarians. There is considerable room for growth regarding direct veterinary referrals to veterinary physiotherapy.
