Improvement of immunoregulation by physical therapies

Functional adaptation of the immune system or so-called „hardening”, can be reached by hydrotherapy (especially by cold exposition or sauna bathing), climatotherapy or moderate exercise. Whereas the clinical benefit of these therapeutical procedures has been extensively proved in literature there are only a few studies about the ability to influence the immune system. Recent studies suggest that hydrotherapy and physical training may alter the balance of th1 and th2 lymphocytes and may improve immunologic regulation as basis of functional adaption. In this context immune training is provided by a stress reaction induced by a disturbance of the cellular and whole body's homeostasis. In contrast, passive therapies such as massage therapy only cause short-term immunological changes without any adaptation which can be explained by the psychoneuroimmunologic network.
