Die Pocken - ein Überblick

Die Pocken (Variola vera, Blattern, »small pox«) sind eine akut verlaufende, hochfieberhafte, exanthematische Viruskrankheit mit hohem Kontagiositätsindex. 1980 erklärte die WHO die Erde für pockenfrei. Die originären Pocken des Menschen sind bis heute nicht mehr aufgetreten. Der folgende Artikel vermittelt einen Überblick über Klinik, Diagnostik, Prä- und Postexpositionsprophylaxe, seuchenhygienische Maßnahmen sowie den möglichen Einsatz der Pockenviren als Biowaffe.
