Abstract

We describe a patient with severe preeclampsia and postpartum complications in whom we investigated a panel of autoimmune reactions.

Case Report

A 27-year-old primigravida was referred at 37 weeks' gestation because of severe preeclampsia. A cesarean section was performed. Postpartum the patient developed severe cardiac dysfunction, thrombocytopenia, eclamptic seizures, and blindness. Immunohistochemical studies of the placenta showed marked deposition of terminal C5b-9 complement complex in intervillous fibrin and in intravillous stroma.

Conclusion

The generation of C5b-9 complement complex may be involved in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia-eclampsia.
